Why Sustainable Seed Company?
Organic Hopi Red Dye Amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus) is a culturally significant heirloom traditionally used by the Hopi Nation for food and natural dye. The plant reaches 4?5 feet tall and offers edible, tender, reddish leaves perfect for salads or microgreens. Mature seed can be ground with cornmeal for red-colored bread. The striking deep red flower heads are also used to produce natural dye?best extracted using the solar dyeing method with an alum mordant. This fast-growing annual thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. One gram of seed sows approximately 45 feet when spaced 12?18 inches apart in 24-inch rows. Ideal for gardens, permaculture, dye projects, and ornamental borders.
Share the tradition and responsibility of sustainable gardening with future generations. We believe gardening is more than just nurturing plants, but it is about nurturing ourselves, family, and community.
John Fendley (“Farmer John”) founded Sustainable Seed Company in 2008 due to his concern that many varieties of fruits and vegetables he remembered from childhood were no longer propagated. John followed his dream and set out to protect and share rare heirloom seeds with the world and, ever since, has been a prominent distributor of exclusive, unique varieties of seeds including fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
