Innovation at Soil Seed & Water
Our founder, started composting as a one-man operation in 2007 with a tractor and a Windrower at Parker Dairy Farm. He learned to make an exceptional product the hard way and spent many days talking with both crop and dairy farmers alike to educate himself on what farmers need. Years later, Mike McMahon significantly scaled the operation and incorporated scientific protocols to develop a consistent and reliable product. Simon's Gold is made from composted dairy manure, a highly valued organic material that many farmers consider to be the best form of fertilizer. By utilizing waste from cows and adhering to the optimal composting process, Mike has managed to create a sustainable and effective product to improve soil health. There are numerous benefits of using composted manure versus raw manure, including a reduction in salt and odors.

For optimal soil health and crop yield, we suggest applying our compost at rates ranging between 5 to 20 tons per acre. The exact rate best suited for your farm will depend on your specific soil conditions and the nutritional needs of your crops. It's always a good idea to start with a soil test to pinpoint those needs. Once you're ready to apply, adjust your spreader settings to match the desired application rate, and remember, the key is to match the compost application with what your soil and crops truly require for best results.
From compost to worm castings and specialized soil amendments, we support both large-scale agricultural endeavors to home gardeners. Embrace regenerative agriculture and join us in nurturing a healthier, sustainable future for all.
Soil Seed and Water’s purpose is to supply the demand of the ever-growing organic farm industry. Specifically, we want to provide consistent quality soils and seed products on a large scale for organic farmers and for retail customers in the southwest United States.
Innovation is a focal point at Soil Seed and Water (SSW). We understand that the only way to produce organic and sustainable compost is to use the tools and technology available in modern-day.
In addition to innovation, the SSW irrigation system delivers an astonishing 10,000 GPH per row directly without needing water truck refills. This saves labor and improves water delivery to the compost. The water used in the composting process contains blue algae called cyanobacteria, which acts as a probiotic that promotes microbial activity and ultimately improves the compost quality. The result of this innovation is that we have a far better and more consistent product, which is cost-effective and then passed on to our clients.
An example of this is the use of the Thermologger. A device designed to eliminate labor and improve temperature taking during the main phases of the composting process. The Thermologger automates temperature logging into the Soil Seed and Water Central Database. SSW central database is designed to be accessible from anywhere to ensure various layers of data monitoring. This improves data accuracy and management.
