Make a pilot hole in the ground using a wooden rod or steel rod.
Insert the spike into the soil at least 8" deep so that the cap is flushed with the ground in order to avoid tripping hazards and the chance of hitting it with a lawnmower.

Effectiveness of the product depends largely upon soil type. Moist clay is the best conductor of sound; dry, sandy or peat soil does not conduct the sonic waves as easily.
