Orchid Nerd K-Lite (12-1-1-10Ca-3Mg) 8oz

Customer Review

Feeding your orchid at the right time and in the right way is a vital part of growing healthy, beautiful orchids.

In nature, all the organic material that falls to the ground slows breaks down over time and provides nutrients to the plants and trees in the area. This K-Lite formula was designed to replicate nature at its best by avoiding root damage and the build of mineral residues and waste by providing a low dose of nutrition as they would receive in nature.

K-Lite fertilizer (12-1-1-10Ca-3Mg) is a high-quality fertilizer that combines macro-nutrients, and secondary nutrients, and is very low in phosphate and soluble potash. ( no urea) It has been developed in response to studies by Michigan State University suggesting that excessive potassium in growing media can have a negative impact on the health of plants, especially in the absence of adequate calcium and magnesium levels.

K-Lite is a fertilizer was developed by Michigan State University with the help of some hardcore, orchid hobbyists. In March of 2013 was featured in an issue of American Orchid Society Magazine talking about the benefits of the K-Lite 12-1-1 for your orchid plants.

This formula was designed to replicate what happens in a natural habitat, where there is fewer amounts of potassium.

Plants require specific nutrients from the soil/mix. The issue is that each year, the plants will draw those nutrients out of the soil/mix, and they don’t magically restock themselves.

Therefore, it is important to fertilize your plants, to ensure they are getting the nutrients plants have already taken from your soil/mix.

It will allow the plants to be able to naturally pull what they need from the soil without any additives.

Studies show that too much of a good thing is always not a great thing. Excessive potassium, whether applied, obtained from, or accumulated in your growing media can have an effect on the growth of your plants. This fertilizer was developed to help reduce the amount of potassium applied to the plant during feeding reducing the amounts of excessive potassium build-up.

In Nature Phosphorus and Potassium are not abundant, epiphytes (plants that grow and climb on trees) are very good at recycling those elements. Nitrogen, Calcium, and Magnesium are abundant. K-Lite is formulated and was developed with the NPK of 12-1-1 plus adds additional calcium/magnesium so you will not need to supplement.

"I’ve been using this fertilizer 2 x a month full strength for my orchids and half strength weekly. It seems to be working as I’ve seen new roots emerging from orchids that I was about to send to the cemetery. The healthy orchids have quite a few new healthy roots, and I’ve noticed new pseudo bulbs coming up. It’s only been a couple of months, so I’m hoping that as time goes by I’ll see even more improvement on those orchids that are not doing well. I dissolve the fertilizer with city water. I was concerned that it wouldn’t work as well, but so far so good. I would recommend."- thryallis

"Most comprehensive fert on the market. Added calmag is essential for most aroids, especially epiphytes." -Arthur Knott
